The model

Free to use, paid to improve

Our apps are free to download and use. Advertising covers the free tier. A subscription removes the ads and unlocks the extras for people who use an app often enough to want that.

We chose subscriptions over one-off purchases because our apps are meant to be maintained for years, and a recurring price is an honest way to fund ongoing work rather than abandoning an app after launch.

Our rules

What we won't do with ads or subscriptions

The model only stays acceptable if you set the limits before the revenue arrives.

Advertising

  • No ads mid-actionNever between you and the thing you opened the app to do.
  • No disguised adsAn ad looks like an ad. It is never dressed as a button or a game element.
  • No ads for virtual currencyIn our games you never watch an ad to keep playing after running out.

Subscriptions

  • No buried cancelCancelling happens in the store, in two taps, exactly as the platform intends.
  • No surprise renewalThe price, the period and the renewal date are stated before you pay, not after.
  • No paywalled basicsThe core job of a utility stays free. A subscription buys convenience, not function.

And in the games, specifically. Our games run on virtual currency that is earned in play and has no monetary value. You cannot buy it, you cannot cash it out, and no subscription or advert gives you better odds in a round. The business model sits entirely outside the game mechanics, which is the only arrangement we think is defensible for games in this category.

The full standard is on our responsible play page.
